STATEMENT
Reflections for Para: 1200 Strikes continues my performance investigation and response to the murders and demolition within the Brazilian Amazon in the state of Para. This investigation began at the Lumen Video and Performance Festival last June in immediate response to the assassination of impoverished farmer and land owner, Obede Loyla Souza. Over 1,150 environmental activists have been the unjust victims to murder in the pursuit of privatized greed. This multimedia performance intended to honor the commitment of formerly slain activists and to expose the extreme instability of the Amazon’s resources. |
ACTIONS
Enter sacred space. Break charcoal bricks into dust. Create paste. Apply charcoal paste to face. Wash paste from hands with soy milk. Place burnt match into plastic bag. Breathe a full breath into the bag. Seal bag with match and air. REPEAT. When surrounded by air filled sacks, string sacks onto mono-filament strand in front of the ceremonial video. Return to base when all complete. REPEAT original action.
